Indexes, trade, and the overnight file

The markets desk writes for readers who already watch prices. We explain what moved, which local companies issued statements, and how regional currencies and commodity prints feed into Singapore’s session.

What this desk covers

Singapore’s listed market is small by global standards and tightly linked to regional trade. Our morning notes start with overnight closes in East Asia, then with US futures when they still matter for the open, then with local announcements timed after the previous session. We name the index, the time of the print, and whether a move is a continuation of a known story or a new filing.

Trade data sits beside equity prices because the port and the airport still set the tone for many local listings. When terminal operators, shipping lines, or logistics groups issue operational updates, we read them against container throughput and air-cargo volumes rather than treating each statement as a standalone headline. Currency notes focus on the Singapore dollar against the US dollar, the Chinese yuan, and the currencies of major trading partners. We do not forecast a target range.

Company copy is built from exchange filings, results slides, and on-the-record comments. If a firm declines to comment, we say so. If a number in a presentation does not match the filing, we ask before we publish. We do not publish price targets or “buy” language. Readers who want a condensed weekday file can see the Morning Brief.

How we treat numbers

Every figure in a markets story should be traceable. Index levels come from the exchange or a recognised vendor print, with the time stated. Company numbers come from filings. Trade statistics come from published official series. If we use a private estimate, we label it as an estimate and name the source. We do not mix calendar years and fiscal years without saying so.

We avoid language that implies certainty about future prices. Phrases such as “will rally” or “guaranteed return” do not belong in this file. When analysts publish views, we treat them as quoted opinions and we say who pays them. The desk does not run a model portfolio and does not accept payment for coverage.

Corrections are published in the story and, for material errors, noted at the top of the page. Send supporting documents to desk@morningledgerpro.pro or use the contact form.
